There are 9 refugee camps along the Thai-Burma border where approximately 120.000 refugees live. The refugees have fled from violence, years of fighting, oppression and general lack of freedom and opportunities. They are Ban Mai Nai Soi, Ban Mae Surin, Mae Ra Ma Lung, Ma La Oon, Mae La, Umphang, Nu Poe, Ban Don Yang, and, Tham Hin.

Nu Poe refugee camp is located on the Thai- Burma border, Tak province in the southern part of Thailand. The population of Nu Poe refugee camp is around 15.000 people.

There was a war in 1992 in Doo Playa District which is in Karen State, and then, the people fled to the areas around Nu Poe. Nu Poe was established in 1997, due to Burma’s political situation and the civil war in Burma. The people could not live in their own states because of the civil war. The Burmese refugees from Nu Poe are Karen, Chin, Mon, Burman, Shan and others.

There are diverse ethnicities that co-exist and they live with multi-cultures.

Nu Poe refugee camp is supported by UNHCR and other Non –governmental organizations. In addition, KRCEE (Karen Refugee Education Entity that GBS is a part of) and other NGOs lead and run the activities for the refugees for education, health care, safety, and shelters. Currently there are discussions about repatriation in the coming future due to political changes in Burma.
