Burma gained independence in 1948 from the British who colonized and ruled Burma for several years. Since the independence, there have been fighting and civil war inside of Burma. The fighting has been going on for more than 60 years, and it is said to be the worlds longest civil war.

The ethnic groups

Burma is a country which has diverse ethnic groups with different histories, languages, religions, and cultures.
There are seven majority ethnic groups which are Kachin, Karenni (also call Kayah), Karen (also call Kayin), Chin, Mon, Burman, Rakhin (also call Arakhin) and Shan.  There are also 135 minority ethnic groups more who are living in Burma.

Nu Poe refugee camp

There are 9 refugee camps along the Thai-Burma border where approximately 120.000 refugees live. The refugees have fled from violence, years of fighting, oppression and general lack of freedom and opportunities. Nu Poe refugee camp is located on the Thai- Burma border in the southern part of Thailand. The population in Nu Poe is 15.000 people.
